Makayla Sukhu, a talented full forward for the Fiji Junior Vonu Under-17 Australian Football League (AFL) team, is inspired by her mother, Vilisi Sukhu, who was a member of the first women’s Fiji Vonu team in 2014. Makayla credits her mother’s legacy as a significant motivator for her involvement in the sport, expressing, “AFL is a different sport, and my mum was the main reason why I took up this sport because she represented Fiji.”

Makayla has developed a deep appreciation for AFL, emphasizing the importance of team bonding and endurance in the game. She remarks, “This sport has really brought out key factors because AFL is different sports in one,” reflecting on the multifaceted nature of the game. Additionally, she has aspirations of sharing her passion with her younger sister, hoping to encourage her involvement in the sport.

Despite the challenges associated with learning AFL, Makayla believes in its potential for growth in Fiji. “It’s a multi-skill sport as it’s quite challenging at first but you’ll be able to carry through,” she noted. With encouragement from her mother to remain focused on her goals and support her teammates, she is determined to excel.

Beyond AFL, Sukhu showcased her versatility by winning the Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) title at the 45th World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, achieving 3.5 out of 7 at her first competitive outing against teams from 193 countries. She also participates in netball with Suva Grammar School and the Lomaiviti club, balancing her sports commitments with academic responsibilities.

Makayla recognizes the vital role of sports in managing stress. “Sport is good as it gives you peace of mind and relieves your stress from other things like schoolwork,” she stated. She expresses gratitude to her parents for their unwavering support and acknowledges the divine guidance that has contributed to her achievements.

This story highlights not only Makayla’s journey in sports but also the potential for women’s AFL in Fiji. As young athletes like her gain recognition and support, there is a promising future for women in sports, paving the way for broader acceptance and growth of Australian football in the region. The determination of young athletes such as Makayla serves as an inspiration to others, showcasing how sports can empower individuals and encourage community engagement.
