Rising Star: 13-Year-Old Claims Top Marks in Fiji Eighth Year Exam

Rayna Chand, a dedicated 13-year-old student from Wainikoro Public School in Macuata, has achieved a remarkable feat by securing the highest score in the Fiji Eighth Year Examination for the Northern Division, marking a historic moment for her school. With an impressive total of 485 out of 500 marks, this accomplishment is a first for WPS.

Rayna’s exceptional performance included stellar grades across all subjects: 97 in English, 94 in Mathematics, a perfect 100 in Basic Science, 97 in Healthy Living, 97 in Social Science, and 88 in Hindi. She attributed her success to her supportive family, particularly her parents and teachers.

Feeling a sense of pride for being the first student from her school to achieve such high marks in Vanua Levu, Rayna expressed gratitude towards her father, an electrician in Suva, and her mother, who works in the school’s administration. She dedicated herself to her studies, often revising late into the night and waking up as early as 4 a.m. to prepare. Despite facing challenges, Rayna remained focused on her goal of excelling academically, stating, “Like other students, I also struggled but I never used it as an excuse to achieve my goal.”

Rayna’s mother, Shareeni Lal, conveyed her pride in her daughter’s academic success and announced plans to send her to Labasa College for further education. The head teacher of WPS, Rajesh Kumar, expressed his gratitude for the support provided by the Ministry of Education’s Labasa office and highlighted that this achievement left the entire school community proud.

As Rayna continues her educational journey, her dedication and hard work serve as an inspiration to her peers, illustrating that perseverance truly does lead to success.
