Rising Rugby Star Maleli Nauvasi Joins Fijian Drua Development Program!

The Fijian Drua has officially welcomed Maleli Nauvasi, a rising star from the Vodafone Deans competition, into the club’s Development program. Nauvasi, who demonstrated exceptional talent at Queen Victoria School, played a pivotal role in securing the premier (U-18) title in 2024 and was named player of the match in the final against Nasinu Secondary School.

His recruitment aligns with the Drua’s renewed commitment to identifying and nurturing local talent early, guiding them towards opportunities for professional contracts in the Super Rugby Pacific squad. Hailing from Dratabu in Nadi, Nauvasi also showcased his skills with the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team, which recently achieved victory against the Australia Schoolboys U18, contributing a try and an assist during the series.

Throughout his journey in the Deans competition, Nauvasi has represented QVS from U14 to U18 levels, taking on various roles such as flyhalf, wing, and fullback. Expressing his enthusiasm about joining the Drua Development program, the dedicated young athlete said, “I’m really excited to be part of the Development program here at the Drua, especially staying close to my parents. I am very happy for this opportunity.”

Ifereimi Rawaqa, the Fijian Drua Development and Skills Coach, expressed his delight in welcoming Nauvasi, highlighting the player’s remarkable promise and discipline on the field. Rawaqa stated, “Nauvasi has proven himself as a standout performer in the Deans and also in the Fiji Schoolboys U18. With the right guidance and support, I am confident he will make a significant impact in the years to come.”

The Drua’s Development program aims to equip young athletes like Nauvasi with the essential resources, coaching, and competitive environment required for a successful transition to professional rugby. Nauvasi is now part of a group of 11 young talents in the Drua Development squad, benefiting from a development contract that includes a salary and regular training alongside the Super Rugby Pacific squad.

These development players also have the opportunity to compete for provincial teams in the Skipper Cup, which runs parallel to the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific.
