For many teenagers, high school represents a time filled with friendships, academics, and aspirations for the future. However, for Rafaele Tuikitai Waqalala, a Year 10 student at Swami Vivekananda College in Nadi, these dreams are coupled with a defined plan and steadfast commitment.
Recently, Rafaele earned a spot among the 29 players chosen for the Fijian Drua Academy. His ambition now is to wear the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua jersey in the next five years. Originating from Batiri village in Macuata and having family ties in Korovuto, Nadi, Rafaele exemplifies how hard work, discipline, and a strong support system can help achieve even the most ambitious goals.
“I thank the Drua management for trusting me to be part of this academy,” Rafaele expressed. “My aim now is to work hard and wear the Drua jersey in five years’ time.”
Rafaele’s deep-rooted passion for rugby has been nurtured by family and tradition. As the third child in his family, he values the teachings of perseverance, especially with the support of his cousin, Mesake Vocevoce, who currently plays as a lock for the Fijian Drua. Mesake stands as a source of inspiration for Rafaele as he navigates his rugby journey.
“My cousin Mesake Vocevoce always motivates me,” Rafaele shared with a beaming smile. “I know I have to do my best, stay disciplined, and listen to my coaches’ advice. I will work hard.”
