Former Ratu Kadavulevu School student and Fijian Drua open-side flanker Motikiai Murray is looking forward to an exciting season next year.
The 21-year-old from Lovoni, Ovalau, Lomaiviti, is in the process of light training after undergoing ankle surgery in Sydney, Australia, a few months ago. He has maternal ties to Nukuni-i-cake in Ono I Lau.
“I’m currently concentrating on my rehabilitation and have been preparing well for the upcoming season,” he stated. “I haven’t started running yet, but I hope to join the field sessions soon.”
Murray made his debut for the Drua in their Super Rugby Pacific quarterfinal against the Crusaders in June of last year. He is learning from the senior players on the team and aspires to make his debut for the Flying Fijians in the near future.
Growing up, he was inspired by Flying Fijian flanker Levani Botia and aimed to follow in his footsteps. “Botia is strong in defense and at the breakdown. I loved watching him and hope to emulate that one day,” he remarked.
“It feels great to play alongside my teammates. I used to watch them in rugby league, sevens, and representing the Flying Fijians. It has been exciting, and my main focus is to stay fit and perform my best during the season.”
Murray also expressed eagerness for the opportunity to wear the national jersey. He mentioned that he is open to playing in the number 8 position if given the chance.
In the past two seasons, he has played six matches for the Drua.
