Rampant kava consumption in Kadavu has become a severe problem, leading to the disintegration of family units. Kadavu Women’s Association leader Bulou Luisa Duikete lamented that many men neglect their family responsibilities in favor of the traditional drink, causing economic hardships and leaving the women to provide for the family.
Duikete made clear that the misuse of kava in the village is leading to financial pressure on families, especially if resources are redirected from necessary expenses and living costs. This situation has forced many island women to assume dual roles – providing for their families and scavenging for food.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged village leaders to assume more responsibility amid this crisis. Rabuka emphasized the role of communal efforts in countering the problem, underscoring the importance of shifting focus towards collective wellbeing and progress.
Rabuka also reminded the village chiefs that their responsibility includes local governance, conflict resolution, and coordination with authorities for essential facilities. He stressed that their role is not just a title but a commitment to enhance the living conditions of their community members.
