A group of Kava Dealers in Fiji is making strides to support local communities by establishing a business aimed at helping farmers sell their kava. This initiative, highlighted by 29-year-old Selemo Banicau from Vusasivo, Natewa, is relatively new, having been in operation for only a few months, yet it has shown promising growth and positive impacts on local livelihoods.
The main goal of the business, known as Veitamani Kava Dealers, is to assist community members who face challenges in promptly selling their kava. Banicau emphasized that this venture is specifically designed to mitigate the issues farmers often encounter, including slow sales processes that can lead to financial distress. Currently, they are focusing on multiple villages along the Natewa coast, such as Dawa, Vusasivo, and Nadavaci, among others.
Kava is sold at prices ranging from $10 to $11 per kilogram, depending on quality and demand. This pricing reflects the hard work that goes into kava farming, especially as Banicau reported the potential to earn between $5,000 to $6,000 in a week through kava sales at the Savusavu market. The earnings from this venture are being reinvested into home improvements and other financial opportunities, including investments in the Fiji Holding Unit Trust.
However, the kava dealers are facing challenges such as harsh weather conditions affecting the quality of their crop. This situation has prompted them to consider cooperative business models to enhance their operations and ensure sustainability. Banicau encourages local farmers not to be discouraged but to pursue effective strategies that could benefit their livelihoods and seek divine guidance throughout their endeavors.
This initiative represents a beacon of hope for kava farmers, as it not only aims to improve their financial stability but also strengthens community ties through collaborative efforts. The success of the Veitamani Kava Dealers highlights the potential impact of entrepreneurship in supporting agricultural sectors and local economies.
