Rising HIV Crisis: What You Need to Know

The Health Ministry has reported that HIV has resulted in 13 fatalities from January to June this year, along with 552 new cases identified during the same timeframe. This marks an increase compared to previous years, with 82 deaths recorded in the entirety of last year and 49 in 2022.

The ministry is strongly urging the public, particularly young individuals, to avoid high-risk behaviors that could lead to the transmission of HIV. This includes the use of intravenous drugs and sharing needles, as well as engaging in unprotected sex with multiple partners, “bluetooth” activities, and “chemsex.”

Importantly, the ministry emphasized that HIV is not a death sentence, as individuals living with the virus can maintain normal lives with appropriate treatment. It calls on the public, especially those involved in high-risk activities, to get tested to understand their HIV status. Those who test positive are encouraged to seek immediate treatment and to adhere strictly to their treatment regimen.
