Petero Maciu, a 21-year-old farmer from Nawi, Buca Bay, Cakaudrove, has been utilizing his land effectively to secure his livelihood. He started farming at a young age, inspired by his father, Sakapo Tui, who encouraged him to make the most of the land.
Petero comes from a family of five and remains close to his relatives in the village. He completed eight years of schooling before deciding not to pursue further education, as he recognized the potential benefits of farming and the substantial return it could offer.
In 2020, he decided to focus entirely on farming, avoiding any distractions. He cultivates various crops, including yaqona, dalo, jaina, niu, and other vegetables, on approximately five acres of land. This year, he has taken to selling his yaqona at the market in Labasa, where he estimates prices range from $70 to $80 per kilo.
His initial sales have earned him around $11,000, and he often travels the five kilometers to his field daily to work diligently. Despite facing challenges, including the potential for adverse weather, Petero remains committed to maximizing his land’s productivity to uplift his standard of living.
He frequently engages with the community, showcasing his produce and sharing his farming experiences. In July, to celebrate his 21st birthday, he organized a communal feast with two cows, inviting the local village to partake in his achievements.
Recently, he sold some of his produce to ease the burden of transporting food to the market. Petero serves as an inspiring example for youths in his village, highlighting the importance of utilizing time effectively to engage in productive endeavors.
He hopes for government assistance to support local farmers in improving their yields, particularly in enhancing the supply chain and transportation of goods. Petero aspires to build a house on his land, purchase farming equipment, and confront the many difficulties that arise, especially during harsh weather conditions.
He emphasizes the need for the youth to value their land and make responsible use of it, reflecting on the challenges of poverty and the importance of farming in overcoming these obstacles. “We must prioritize sustainable living, listen to our elders, and acknowledge the guidance of God in every endeavor,” he asserts.
