Rising Crime Wave: Fiji Faces Alarming Surge in Sexual Offences

In September, the Fiji Police Force received reports of 118 serious sexual offences. Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci indicated that rape was the most frequently reported crime, followed by indecent assault, sexual assault, abduction of minors, attempted rape, and defilement, among other offences.

Raikaci also revealed that six police officers faced charges for serious offences, including abuse of office, causing bodily harm, fraud, illegal drug possession, and wrongful confinement.

Additionally, police officers themselves were victims of crime while performing their duties, with 171 officers reported as victims in 219 incidents. Among these, 33 appeared in cases with multiple counts related to serious assaults and resisting arrest.

During September, a total of 838 individuals were charged with various offences, including 48 juveniles. Offenders aged 18 to 35 accounted for 486 of the charges, those aged 36 to 55 made up 266, and 38 offenders were 56 years or older.

Raikaci urged communities to partner with the Fiji Police Force in combating crime, highlighting the concerning trend of juveniles involved in criminal activities, which could hinder their education and future. He emphasized the need for support from families and communities in guiding young people.

As the festive season approaches, the Acting Commissioner noted that the Fiji Police Force would intensify its operations and called for respect for the law to ensure safer communities for everyone.
