Rising Concerns: Is Oral Disease the New NCD?

According to Dr. Parikshath Naidu, president of the Fiji Dental Association, oral disease is now classified as a non-communicable disease (NCD). At the Fiji Dental Annual Conference in Nadi, Dr. Naidu expressed concerns about the rising incidence of NCDs both globally and in Fiji. He emphasized that the Ministry of Health has acknowledged the increasing trend of NCDs in the country.

Dr. Naidu stated, “The association aims to explore ways to help reduce NCDs, improving the health and well-being of the Fijian population.” The conference featured several prominent speakers from both local and international backgrounds.

He noted the desire for a diverse lineup of speakers at the event, highlighting the association’s global recognition, which often attracts more speakers than they can accommodate. Among the notable attendees was Professor Young Guk Park from Seoul, Korea, representing the World Dental Federation. Additionally, speakers from Australia contributed remotely, ensuring a wide array of insights and expertise were available. The event also appreciated the qualifications and achievements of local graduates from the Fiji National University.

On Saturday, the Fiji Dental Association held its annual general meeting.
