Cancer cases have been steadily rising among both men and women, a concerning trend highlighted by Dr. Ane Veu, a consultant from CWM, during the recent Pinktober celebrations in Suva. Dr. Veu emphasized that the Ministry of Health is actively working to enhance cancer treatment options, including early detection methods for both genders.

Notably, Dr. Veu mentioned that the incidence of breast cancer is not limited to women; some male patients have also been diagnosed. In response, the Ministry is planning to introduce screening and radiation therapy specifically for these cases.

At the Pinktober event, Lynda Tabuya, Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, expressed that this month’s celebrations serve as a tribute to the lives of cancer survivors while also promoting better treatment solutions for those currently facing the disease. “Pinktober” reflects the realities that breast cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers endure.

Tabuya stressed the importance of increasing awareness about cancer treatment, particularly within rural communities, which often lack access to vital information. She advocated for engaging these communities through information sessions organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Rural Development Ministry.

As part of their commitment to supporting cancer initiatives, the Ministry of Women has contributed $5,000 to the Fiji Cancer Society to help implement various programs aimed at reducing cancer rates in the Pacific, where it remains one of the leading causes of death in Fiji.

This initiative highlights the collective effort towards not only raising awareness about cancer, especially in marginalized communities, but also ensuring that people have access to the necessary resources for prevention and treatment.

In summary, the ongoing efforts from the health authorities and the support from the government reflect a growing awareness and commitment to combat cancer, providing hope for better health outcomes for affected individuals and their families.
