Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating challenge to global health, particularly evident in the current landscape of healthcare in Fiji. Since 2015, the National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee has taken the initiative to organize World AMR Awareness Week, which commenced on November 18 and continues until November 24 this year.
This awareness week emphasizes the significance of education regarding hygiene practices and vaccinations, utilizing insights gained during the COVID-19 pandemic to guide its messaging. Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, the Chief Medical Advisor to the Health Ministry, officially inaugurated AMR Week in Labasa, underscoring the critical nature of AMR, which poses a threat not only to the advancements of modern medicine but also to lives at risk today.
Dr. Cikamatana outlined Fiji’s proactive strategy through the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which is currently in its second edition. This comprehensive plan focuses on key objectives while promoting collaboration across various health sectors. She advocates for public adherence to healthcare providers’ recommendations regarding antibiotic usage, discouraging the sharing of prescriptions, and emphasizing the importance of not requesting antibiotics unless deemed absolutely necessary.
The message of combined efforts is paramount, extending beyond the healthcare arena to encompass human, animal, and environmental health in the fight against AMR. With a collective approach and a commitment to education, advocacy, and action, Fiji endeavors to pave the way for a healthier future for both local and global communities.
This initiative not only aims to combat a significant health threat but also reinforces the importance of responsible antibiotic use in safeguarding health worldwide. By promoting awareness and best practices, the collective efforts can lead to a meaningful impact in the ongoing battle against antimicrobial resistance.
