To the Year 8 Students of Fiji,
First and foremost, heartfelt congratulations to those of you who have excelled in your exams! Your achievements reflect the hard work you’ve invested, along with the support of your parents, families, and ancestors. This is a moment worth celebrating with humility and gratitude.
However, I want to address those of you who may not have passed or who did not achieve the desired results. Remember, this moment does not define your future. While it may feel challenging now, and the disappointment may sting, understand that it’s a temporary setback. People may talk about results for a short time, but soon enough, they will shift their focus elsewhere.
What truly matters is your response to this situation. When I was younger, I struggled with certain subjects and faced tough teachers who created a competitive environment that often humiliated students. That experience left its mark on me and took years to overcome, as I worked to heal from a toxic educational culture overly obsessed with grades.
As a teacher now, I made a commitment that no student would ever experience what I did. We must move beyond the obsession with test scores, rooted in a colonial past and limited resources. Your worth is not defined by numbers.
Whether you scored a perfect 100 or a 50, success is about intent, ambition, and hard work. Each individual is unique; some may excel in mathematics while others shine in sports. The only real competition is with yourself: have you progressed since you started?
It’s perfectly okay to feel upset today—I’ve been there too. However, let this disappointment ignite your determination to improve. Use this energy for positive endeavors, and one day, you’ll reflect on this moment with pride for the journey you’ve made since.
I wish someone had shared this realization with me in my youth, and now it’s our duty to foster a healthier mindset regarding academic performance for the generations to come. Remember, you are more than enough—for yourself, for your parents, and for the world.
When you look in the mirror, be proud of who you see. Don’t let negative words from others diminish your worth or talents. The world is eagerly anticipating your contributions, and your journey is only just beginning.
Keep pushing forward and believing in yourself. You have incredible potential, and you truly are enough.
With warm regards and best wishes for your future endeavors.
This message not only encourages students facing setbacks but also highlights the importance of personal growth and resilience. By focusing on inner strength and ambition, students can cultivate a positive mindset that leads to success beyond academic parameters. Remember, every challenge is merely a stepping stone to greater accomplishments.
