Ana Seru, a Year Nine student, triumphed as the top female cadet at the John Wesley College passing-out parade held at Albert Park in Suva. Growing up in the crowded Raiwaqa area, which is plagued by social challenges, provided a significant backdrop for Ana’s achievements.
During her week of cadet training, Ana faced the hot and humid weather while mastering her marching techniques. Reflecting on her journey, the 14-year-old shared, “I knew my upbringing was not ideal, but I strived for excellence every time I stepped into the classroom. The only way to improve my life is through education.”
Ana hails from Naivucini, Naitasiri, and emphasized the importance of sound decision-making, particularly in the face of peer pressure. She noted, “Making good choices leads to positive outcomes,” a lesson instilled in her from an early age.
The award ceremony was particularly special for Ana as she dedicated her success to her siblings and her father, who was present at the event. “I’m the introvert in the family, and I hope this award will inspire my younger siblings to believe that they can achieve anything if they set their minds to it,” she expressed. Ana’s performance has inspired her younger siblings, currently in primary school, to aspire to join secondary school and engage in cadet training.
