To the Year 8 Students of Fiji:
Congratulations to those who achieved outstanding results! Your accomplishments are a testament to your dedication and the sacrifices made by your support system, including your parents and family.
This is a moment for celebration, but today I want to address those who may not have passed or who did not achieve the results they were hoping for.
Please remember that this is not the end of your journey. While the disappointment may feel intense right now and the reactions of others may linger for a bit, they will eventually shift their focus elsewhere. What truly matters is how you choose to respond to this moment.
Reflecting on my own educational experiences, I remember feeling overwhelmed by certain subjects and a teacher who publicly ranked students based on their exam scores. This experience left lasting scars that took years to overcome, particularly in an environment where grades seemed all that mattered.
As a teacher, I promised to ensure that my students would never feel the way I did. It’s essential to move beyond the unhealthy obsession with exam results that has roots in a colonial past and historical limitations. Your worth is not determined by a numeric score.
It’s crucial to understand that whether you receive a score of 100 or 50, both can lead to success in life. What distinguishes individuals is their intent, ambition, and hard work. Everyone has unique strengths; some may excel in Mathematics while others find their strengths in sports, arts, or different subjects.
The important competition lies within yourself. Ask yourself: have you improved since you began your journey?
Feeling upset today is valid and part of the process. Use this disappointment as motivation to strive for better outcomes in the future. Redirect your energy into something constructive, and in time, you may look back on this moment with pride for the progress you’ve made.
It is our duty to shift away from a toxic fixation on grades, prioritizing our well-being and growth instead. You are more than enough—both for yourself and those around you.
When you look at yourself in the mirror, take pride in who you are. Don’t allow anyone’s negative opinions to diminish your self-worth.
The world is full of possibilities, and this moment is just the beginning of your journey. Keep pushing forward, and never stop believing in yourself.
You possess immense potential, brilliance, and worth.
In summary, while academic setbacks can be disheartening, they do not define you. Embrace your individuality and capabilities, using today’s experience as a stepping stone to future success.
Keep striving, and remember that you are capable of achieving greatness.
