Rise Above: A Message for Year 8 Students in Fiji

Spread the love

To the Year 8 Students of Fiji,

Congratulations to those of you who passed your exams with exceptional results! Your achievements reflect the dedication and support of your parents, family, and even your ancestors. Take time to celebrate this achievement with humility and gratitude.

For those who may not have achieved the results they hoped for, remember that this is not the end of your journey. The pain and disappointment you are feeling now are valid, but they are temporary. Soon, life will move on, and so will others’ conversations. What truly matters is how you choose to move forward from this moment.

In my own educational experience, I faced challenges with certain subjects and teachers. I distinctly remember a teacher who publicly ranked students by their exam scores, which led to feelings of humiliation and self-doubt. This experience left lasting scars and took years for me to overcome. When I became a teacher, I vowed that my students would not experience the same hurt. It is crucial to move away from the unhealthy emphasis on test results inherited from our past. Your worth is not dictated by a number.

Whether you scored a perfect 100 or a 50, both of you can achieve success. The difference lies in your intention, ambition, and hard work. Every individual has unique strengths and weaknesses; some may excel in mathematics while finding science challenging, or vice versa. The only competition that truly matters is the one you have with yourself. Reflect on whether you have grown since your starting point.

It is entirely normal to feel upset today—I have been in your shoes. However, let this disappointment drive your ambition to improve. Focus your energy positively, and one day, you may look back on this moment and feel proud of how far you’ve come.

It is our duty to disrupt the cycle of toxic focus on exam scores for future generations. You are more than enough for yourself, your family, and the world around you. When you look in the mirror, take pride in who you see. Don’t let disparaging remarks from others make you doubt your worth or abilities.

The world is waiting for you, and your journey is just beginning. Continue to strive and believe in yourself. You are capable, you are brilliant, and you are enough.

In summary, find strength in your experiences and aim to grow from them. This moment does not define you; rather, it is a stepping stone towards a promising future.

All the best as you continue on your path!
