The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) represents more than just its uniforms and weapons, according to Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. In a recent interview on The Lens@177, he emphasized the RFMF’s ongoing relevance for several reasons.
Kalouniwai pointed out that the RFMF employs over 5,000 troops and plays a critical role in various security dimensions amid changing international, regional, and national dynamics, as well as geopolitical shifts. He noted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the RFMF was significantly involved, even outside its usual responsibilities.
He highlighted that there is a broader understanding of the RFMF’s contributions that goes beyond merely its military appearance. The Commander acknowledged that historical events, such as coups, have contributed to a limited perception of the RFMF’s multifaceted security role.
When questioned about potential reductions in troop numbers suggested by the upcoming National Defence and Safety Review, Kalouniwai recognized the complexity of such an issue. He stated that the RFMF operates under government authority and must adhere to recommendations, while also indicating his commitment to advocating for the necessary resources to sustain the RFMF’s functions.
Furthermore, he discussed productivity metrics related to the RFMF’s contributions, highlighting praise received for its peacekeeping efforts during a recent leaders’ meeting in Tonga. The RFMF’s role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief within the region was also commended.
In conclusion, Kalouniwai expressed his belief in the need for more officers, emphasizing the RFMF’s vital responsibilities for the nation.
