RFMF’s Reconciliation Program: What About Shane Stevens?

Former military officer Shane Stevens’ involvement in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces’ (RFMF) reconciliation program remains unclear at this time. RFMF Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai confirmed that Stevens is still undergoing legal proceedings and emphasized that the legal process would not be interfered with.

Ro Kalouniwai indicated that the RFMF is concentrating on soldiers who have exited the military system. He noted that the reconciliation program is anticipated to conclude by November 2, marking the anniversary of the 2000 mutiny.

He stated, “This doesn’t prevent us from moving forward with our reconciliation efforts, but we believe we can align our work with that of the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission.” He highlighted the importance of uniting everyone involved, mentioning plans to engage with senior officers from various locations, including Labasa and Suva.

The Commander mentioned key figures expected to participate, including the Prime Minister and two former presidents, who will attend in their capacity as RFMF officers. “They will set aside their political and civil roles at the QEB gate and enter as RFMF officers,” he explained.

Kalouniwai acknowledged that the reconciliation process has been emotionally challenging, sharing that it has brought many to tears as painful stories from the past were recounted. He emphasized that credit for initiating the process belongs to the RFMF’s senior members, stating, “I just become the face of the RFMF, trying to resonate with this particular process and share it with the public.”

He concluded by expressing that the focus should not be on who will ultimately be credited with the legacy of the reconciliation effort.
