RFMF’s Journey: From Controversy to Community Trust

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is actively working to change its negative reputation associated with past coups. Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai acknowledged that this perception has affected how the public views the RFMF. He emphasized that although these memories will persist, the military is committed to demonstrating that it has evolved from its past image over the last 16 to 24 years.

Kalouniwai expressed optimism that the community would eventually gain confidence to engage more with RFMF members. He highlighted the importance of transforming the RFMF into a professional military institution by developing ethical officers and soldiers.

In addressing concerns raised by figures like former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, who has had negative experiences with the military, Kalouniwai stated that the best way to rebuild trust is to showcase the RFMF’s current values and objectives. He reiterated the significance of fostering morally strong personnel within the RFMF, emphasizing the importance of doing what is right.
