RFMF’s Bold Promise: Bye to Coups, Hello to Stability!

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is undergoing a transformation aimed at enhancing the nation’s security, according to Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. In an interview on The Lens@177, Ro Kalouniwai emphasized that this change is intended to alleviate feelings of insecurity, tension, and uncertainty within the country.

He assured the public that the RFMF is committed to moving away from any involvement in coups. “We will be subservient to the Government of the day,” he stated, expressing hope that citizens can embrace the new direction and reconcile with the RFMF’s efforts.

Ro Kalouniwai acknowledged the advice of Mahendra Chaudhry, recognizing it as valuable insight that needs to be taken into account while also emphasizing his role in managing the situation effectively. He affirmed the RFMF’s significance as an institution in Fiji.

He cautioned that if any mistakes are made by the RFMF, it can lead to swift changes and increased tensions. Thus, it is crucial to demonstrate to the public that the RFMF is on a path distinct from the past two decades.

When asked about a succession plan, he noted that the deputy could serve temporarily, but the appointment of a new commander is ultimately determined by the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC). Ro Kalouniwai also ruled out any intentions to enter the political arena in the future.
