RFMF’s Bold Move: Rebuilding Trust and Image After Controversy

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is actively striving to change its “coup image.” Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai expressed that this perception has negatively impacted the RFMF’s standing with the public. He acknowledged that the memories of past events would linger, but the RFMF is committed to reassuring citizens that it has evolved from its former self over the last 16 to 24 years.

Major-General Kalouniwai aims for a point where the community will feel more confident to engage and interact with RFMF members. He emphasized the importance of transforming the RFMF into a more professional military, focusing on nurturing ethical officers and soldiers.

In response to concerns about individuals like former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry, who have experienced military oppression and remain cautious of the RFMF, Kalouniwai stated that the best way to earn their trust is to demonstrate the current values and direction of the RFMF.

He reiterated the necessity of developing morally strong members within the RFMF who will uphold ethical standards and do what is right.
