Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, the Chairman of the GREAT Council of Chiefs, has emphasized the necessity for a reformed Republic of Fiji’s Military Forces (RFMF) to restore public confidence. Speaking at the RFMF reconciliation and restoration program, he urged senior military officers to exemplify strong leadership qualities for the benefit of younger members within the military and the community.

He reflected on the long-standing uncertainty since 1987, which has eroded the public’s trust in the RFMF. Ratu Viliame expressed concern that misguided directives and actions have strayed from the sacrifices made by ancestors, leading to widespread pain and disappointment.

As he takes on this vital leadership role, Ratu Viliame acknowledges the unacceptable state of current affairs based on feedback from the Church, the Vanua (the land or community), and the government regarding the iTaukei culture. He called for an end to the military’s involvement in past political turmoil, including coups and attempted mutinies, urging that these events be put behind them.

Ratu Viliame’s message is clear: moving forward, the focus must be on building a legacy of exceptional and wise leadership inspired by divine guidance, ensuring that future generations are prepared to uphold these values. He passionately pleaded with senior officers to teach young RFMF members to think of their successors, emphasizing that reclaiming public trust starts with a commitment to positive change.

In conclusion, Ratu Viliame’s call for reform in the RFMF invites hope for a more unified and trusted military force, standing ready to work collaboratively with the community to heal past wounds. It paves the way for a new chapter that prioritizes integrity and responsibility, showing that change is possible when guided by strong principles and community support.

This initiative marks a crucial step towards fostering a brighter future for Fiji, rebuilding trust, and demonstrating that the military can indeed serve as a pillar of strength and support for the nation.
