The Naval Division of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has successfully implemented a series of operations aimed at enforcing maritime rules, with a special focus on protecting fisheries.
The operations were launched from Forward Base North and Forward Base West, and they marked notable cooperation with the Fiji Police and Fiji Ministry Fisheries, focussing on preserving our marine resources.
From Forward Base West, a major operation was undertaken, leading to the arrest of several vessels suspected of engaging in illegal fishing activities. These operations exposed the illicit use of dynamite, an incredibly damaging and unlawful method of fishing posing substantial risks to marine ecosystems.
The partnership between the Navy, Fiji Police, and Fiji Fisheries was crucial to the success of these operations, highlighting the importance of unified efforts in tackling illegal activities.
The Fiji Navy, in collaboration with its partners, has vowed to maintain active surveillance over our waters, ensuring our fisheries’ safety. This recent arrest serves as a stern deterrent to those involved in illegal fishing practices, signalling that such activities will not be overlooked.
