The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) represents more than just its visible aspects like uniforms and weaponry, according to Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. In a recent interview on The Lens@177, Kalouniwai emphasized the RFMF’s ongoing relevance, highlighting that it employs over 5,000 personnel.
He pointed to the evolving international, regional, and national dynamics alongside geopolitics as factors necessitating the RFMF’s assistance. He noted their significant involvement during the COVID-19 pandemic, even though it fell outside their usual responsibilities.
Kalouniwai explained that the RFMF plays a comprehensive role in security that extends beyond traditional military functions. He expressed concern that public perception tends to focus solely on the RFMF’s military attire and equipment.
The Commander acknowledged the historical stigma tied to past coups, which complicates the understanding of the RFMF’s multifaceted role in security. When asked about the potential for a reduction in personnel based on the upcoming National Defence and Safety Review, he described it as a challenging topic, asserting that the RFMF is answerable to the government and must consider any recommendations made.
However, he sees an opportunity to advocate for maintaining current personnel numbers. He cited a recent meeting where the Prime Minister praised the RFMF’s contributions to peacekeeping and highlighted their critical role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief within the region.
Kalouniwai stressed that while some may evaluate the RFMF’s value solely in monetary terms, their contributions are diverse and vital. He asserted the need for more officers to fulfill the RFMF’s extensive responsibilities in Fiji.
