The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) encompasses more than just its uniforms and weaponry, according to Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. In a recent interview, he outlined the several reasons for the RFMF’s ongoing relevance.
Kalouniwai highlighted that the RFMF provides employment for over 5,000 personnel. He emphasized that the evolving international, regional, and national dynamics, particularly in geopolitics, create various scenarios in which RFMF members are called to assist.
He pointed out the RFMF’s involvement during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite it not being their primary responsibility. Kalouniwai characterized the RFMF as part of a broad security framework, stressing the need for better public understanding of the organization’s diverse roles beyond military appearances.
Addressing the stigma linked to past coups, he noted that it has clouded perceptions of the RFMF’s multi-dimensional role in security. When asked about the potential for a reduction in troop numbers due to a new National Defence and Safety Review, Kalouniwai admitted it was a complex issue but reaffirmed that the RFMF is subordinate to the government and must adhere to recommendations.
He mentioned that there are opportunities to advocate for maintaining current troop levels, stressing the RFMF’s significant contributions. Recent discussions highlighted the RFMF’s commendable role in peacekeeping during a leaders’ meeting in Tonga, as well as its contributions to humanitarian aid and disaster relief in the region.
Kalouniwai concluded by stating that productivity should not just be measured in financial terms, as the RFMF serves a critical function for the country that goes beyond monetary value. He expressed a desire for an increase in personnel to better fulfill the RFMF’s responsibilities.
