The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) represents more than just the uniforms worn and firearms carried, according to Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. In a recent interview on The Lens@177, he emphasized the ongoing relevance of the RFMF for several reasons.

Kalouniwai highlighted that the RFMF provides employment for over 5,000 personnel. With evolving dynamics at international, regional, and national levels due to geopolitical factors, there are numerous situations where the support of RFMF members is essential. He noted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite it not being their primary responsibility, the RFMF played a significant role in the response.

The commander explained that the RFMF operates within a broad spectrum of security that extends beyond traditional military roles. He expressed a desire for greater public understanding of the diverse functions of the RFMF, which is often viewed narrowly through the lens of their military presence.

Kalouniwai acknowledged the stigma associated with past coups, which has affected perceptions of the RFMF’s multifaceted contributions to security. When questioned about the possibility of a reduction in personnel arising from the upcoming National Defence and Safety Review, he stated that it would be a challenging question to answer. He affirmed that the RFMF operates under the direction of the government and must adhere to its recommendations. However, he also mentioned his commitment to advocating for the RFMF’s current size and necessity.

The discussion touched on the productivity of the RFMF, with Kalouniwai referring to a recent meeting where praises for the RFMF’s contribution to peacekeeping were highlighted. He pointed out that the RFMF is also recognized for its efforts in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief within the region. While he acknowledged that discussions on productivity often focus on financial metrics, he stressed that the RFMF’s approach and impact extend beyond such evaluations. He expressed a need for additional officers, as he believes the RFMF has significant responsibilities to fulfill for the nation.
