RFMF Commander Vows to Enhance Transparency and Accountability

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) emphasizes its dedication to transparency and accountability towards taxpayers and the government. Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai expressed in an interview last week that there has been significant progress in these areas within the RFMF.

Kalouniwai stated, “At the end of the day, we are accountable to the taxpayers, the Government, and the public at large.” He acknowledged that the RFMF has historically operated in a closed environment, but that is changing. “We need to get out of that box and be a lot more seen by the public and provide more awareness,” he added.

When questioned about the transparency levels under previous commanders, he refrained from saying they had “failed,” noting that different conditions may have existed during their leadership, affecting their options and willingness to promote transparency.

Kalouniwai explained that leading the RFMF requires wearing both a leader’s and a commander’s hat. He distinguished between the two roles, saying that leaders often navigate complex situations, while commanders adhere strictly to rules and regulations. He expressed his ambition to embody both roles effectively.

Upon his appointment in September 2021, his first action plan was to assemble a team by December to initiate a five-year strategic plan for the RFMF to establish direction and purpose. He also stressed the importance of building a climate of trust within the organization, emphasizing that trust involves being accountable to colleagues.

He detailed his leadership approach, which entails decentralizing responsibilities and allowing subordinate commanders to operate at their respective levels while he focuses on strategic management without micromanaging.
