RFMF Chief: Testing the Waters for Constitutional Change

The commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, stated that the decision to review the 2013 Constitution is a political matter, yet it remains lawful. He made these remarks following a reconciliation event at Sukanaivalu VC Barracks.

In light of recent criticism from experts regarding the military’s involvement in constitutional matters, Ro Jone affirmed the RFMF’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and adhering to the established procedures. He noted that the ongoing efforts reflect what they view as significant and integral to the constitutional review process.

“The RFMF has consistently advocated for the rule of law and following the process,” he said, emphasizing the constitutional provisions that enable a review process.

He mentioned that considerable discussions among politicians and policymakers have raised concerns about the feasibility of changing the Constitution due to requirements like securing a two-thirds majority in Parliament and holding a referendum.

“Those are their comments, but I would say there’s no harm in testing the provisions. They can test it for the first time; if it doesn’t work, they can try again. If it still doesn’t work, that could validate the need for an alternative approach,” he added.

Additionally, Ro Jone indicated that the RFMF intends to engage in the national reconciliation process by collaborating with the National Truth and Reconciliation Committee. He emphasized the importance of building relationships with individuals impacted by past coups.
