Revving Up for Infrastructure: PWD Receives New Heavy Machinery

The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to commence operations following its reinstatement by the government last year. In recent months, activities at PWD have gained momentum with the arrival of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers in Suva.

The handover of the new equipment took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, attended by officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport. Paula Baleilevuka, the Ministry’s permanent secretary, emphasized that the timely arrival of these machines will significantly enhance infrastructure and capacity building.

According to Mr. Baleilevuka, these assets represent an integral part of the ministry’s new inventory of machines and equipment. He noted, “These machines will enhance road standards and conditions, improving accessibility for economic activities.” He further stated that they will bolster the capacity to conduct road construction and maintenance, particularly in rural and remote regions.

The ministry’s recent acquisition includes:

– Two large excavators
– Two D6 bulldozers
– Two dumper trucks
– One flat-top truck

The total value of these eight machines is $1,627,104. For the current fiscal year, the Ministry has been allocated $5 million aimed at upgrading and enhancing rural roads. Mr. Baleilevuka indicated that this new equipment will be utilized for forthcoming projects.
