The new $8.34 million Nagado water treatment plant will benefit 38,810 households in Nadi, according to the Minister for Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Service, Ro Filipe Tuisawau.
Ro Filipe recently visited the west to inspect government-funded project sites.
“The new water treatment plant incorporates advanced technologies, allowing processing and critical data to be monitored from Lautoka and Suva,” Ro Filipe said. “The importance of updated technologies lies in their ability to evaluate the amount of water needed.”
He emphasized the significance of using updated technologies to monitor water usage. “It’s crucial to capture data to understand how much water is being used in households, farms, or industries, which helps us plan for future needs. Since resources are limited, any development must align with the available resources to prevent future environmental issues.”
Ongoing construction work is being carried out on the pipeline from Varaqe to Saru in Lautoka, and there is also continued construction of the Nagado Water Treatment Plant to Nadele, Nadi. These projects are expected to be completed by December this year.
“In Nadi and Lautoka, considering the upcoming developments such as hotels, industrial areas, subdivisions, and other projects, there is a growing need for water,” Ro Filipe said. “This is why sustainable planning is essential.”
He concluded by stressing the need to balance developments with resource availability. “We must consider how much water we can extract and ensure that the development aligns with the resources we have, whether it’s water, land, or other resources. It is critical to maintain a balance in development.”
