The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) and The Fertile Factory & Company Limited have initiated talks about a collaborative effort aimed at promoting sustainability in recycling and agriculture. This proposed partnership intends to address plastic waste management and improve organic farming techniques.
The Fertile Factory recently launched BulaBioBrew Soil, an organic liquid fertilizer designed to enhance soil biology and plant health. This product is packaged in PET bottles, providing a chemical-free alternative to enhance soil diversity and balance.
PRF is looking into methods to recover these PET bottles after the fertilizer is used, exploring the possibility of a deposit system that would promote the collection, reuse, and recycling of the bottles to prevent environmental pollution and reduce landfill waste.
Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, expressed enthusiasm about the potential collaboration with The Fertile Factory, noting that it could mark a significant first for Fiji. He said, “If this collaboration progresses, it will help reduce plastic waste by ensuring that PET bottles used to package BulaBioBrew Soil are recycled through our programs. This initiative will contribute to a cleaner environment while fostering sustainable agricultural practices.”
Another aspect under consideration is whether PRF’s sustainability arm, Malhana Cloud Kitchen Restaurant, could trial BulaBioBrew Soil on its farms, which follow a farm-to-table model. This trial could demonstrate the benefits of organic fertilizers and highlight the significance of plastic waste recycling in agriculture.
Sanjeev Chand, CEO of The Fertile Factory, expressed optimism about the discussions, stating, “We are happy to explore collaboration with the Pacific Recycling Foundation. BulaBioBrew Soil has the potential to change how farmers care for their soil, and by partnering with PRF, we aim to ensure that our PET bottles do not harm the environment. Although these discussions are still in the early stages, we see great promise in developing a recycling system that supports sustainable farming.”
While still in the initial phase, the talks between PRF and The Fertile Factory could lead to an innovative approach that combines organic farming with effective plastic waste management.
