A new portable sugarcane harvester, specifically designed for hilly terrains, is poised to revolutionize the harvesting process for farmers operating in Fiji’s elevated cane farms. This machine has been imported from Japan by the Ministry of Sugar and is anticipated to alleviate several challenges faced by farmers in these rugged areas.
Minister Charan Jeath Singh recently returned from Japan, where he observed the harvester’s capabilities firsthand, sharing images of it on his official Facebook page and confirming its upcoming delivery to Fiji. In discussions with growers throughout the nation, he emphasized the struggles associated with harvesting sugarcane on steep farms, stating, “A significant percentage of our sugarcane comes from high-elevation farms, where manual harvesting is a daunting task.” He believes the introduction of this harvester will enhance harvesting opportunities and reduce the workload for farmers.
The consultations also highlighted labor shortages and transportation issues, which have been intensified by adverse weather conditions. The new harvester, featuring special tracks designed for better mobility on uneven terrain, aims to effectively address these challenges.
Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, pointed out that mechanization is essential for the sustainability of Fiji’s sugarcane industry. He stressed the necessity of investing in machinery to mitigate labor shortages, stating, “Without machines, the strain on labor will burn you out.” As a sugarcane farmer himself, Ratu Jone recounted his experience using a sugarcane planter to cope with labor shortages, underscoring the industry’s inherent labor intensity and the need for timely machinery upgrades to maintain viability.
Farmer Mohammed Yunus echoed these concerns, citing the increasing difficulty in finding manual labor for harvesting. With the arrival of this specialized harvester, farmers in Fiji’s challenging terrains can anticipate a shift towards more efficient and less labor-intensive harvesting, leading to a more sustainable future for the sugarcane industry.
