An enhanced risk-informed evacuation center was inaugurated on Wednesday for the residents of Yalobi in Waya, Yasawa, providing refuge for over 200 individuals during future disasters.
This facility was established by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, in collaboration with the UN Development Programme’s (UNDP) Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific project, at an investment exceeding FJ$60,000.
The center is designed to mitigate various risks for vulnerable community members, featuring ramps for accessibility, an indoor kitchen, washrooms, and solar lighting.
These enhancements aim to safeguard women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities in the event of a natural disaster.
During the ceremony, locals recalled the harrowing experience of Tropical Cyclone Bebe in 1972, when they had to trek uphill for three hours to seek refuge in a mountain cave. In recent disasters, villagers had to take shelter in their homes due to the lack of proper evacuation facilities. The community expressed appreciation toward the Government, donors, and UNDP for this vital support that will enhance their safety and well-being.
Jovesa Vocea, the Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, highlighted the significance of risk-informed rural and maritime development to ensure long-term resilience.
He described the Yalobi Risk Informed Evacuation Centre as a crucial asset for the village’s residents, emphasizing that it serves as more than just a building.
“I am pleased to note that in times of peace, this center will also function as a hub for community initiatives that empower our people, particularly women and youth,” Vocea stated.
The facility will also host various socio-economic activities aimed at uplifting the local community of Yalobi.
UNDP Pacific Gov4Res Project Manager Nicola Glendining remarked on the continued collaboration with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management to bolster the resilience of rural communities in Fiji, aligning with the Ministry’s strategic priorities.
