Aminiasi Voresara, a senior education officer with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), has advocated for drug rehabilitation centers in Fiji to incorporate skills-based training. During a recent congress involving the Fiji Teachers Registration Authority and the Ministry of Education at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, he expressed his concerns to acting permanent secretary Ratu Meli Nacuva regarding the reliance on temporary fixes to address the country’s drug problems.
Voresara emphasized the importance of transforming rehabilitation facilities into centers that provide vocational training. He noted that while efforts are being made to change individuals’ behavior and habits, there is a lack of preparation for their future. He stated, “Otherwise, we’ll become another nursery center. We are rehabilitating the attitude and habits, but we’re not preparing them for the future.”
Additionally, Assistant Commissioner of Police for Internal Affairs Sakeo Ganivatu mentioned ongoing discussions with a non-governmental organization (NGO) focused on similar objectives. He affirmed the importance of collaboration with external partners, including medical professionals and education leaders, to address these pressing issues.
In related news, Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad indicated that funding for the establishment of the Fiji Counter Narcotics Bureau and a drug rehabilitation center would be considered in the upcoming 2024-2025 national budget.
This initiative represents a proactive approach towards addressing drug rehabilitation, emphasizing not only recovery but equipping individuals with vital skills for their future success. By focusing on both rehabilitation and education, there is hope that individuals can reintegrate into society with improved prospects and a stronger foundation for a drug-free life.
In summary, the call for skills training in drug rehabilitation centers highlights a significant shift towards more comprehensive solutions for combating drug issues in Fiji. It aims to stabilize communities by providing recovering individuals with the tools they need to thrive, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.
