“Revolutionizing Planting Grants: A Game-Changer for Sugarcane Farmers”

Sugarcane farmers in the Wainikoro sector of Labasa have proposed that the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) and the Ministry of Sugar consider implementing an open-access system for planting grants. This proposal would allow farmers to apply for these grants at any time of the year.

Farmer Bal Sanju Reddy highlighted the need for this change during a recent visit from the Minister for Employment, Productivity, and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh. Reddy emphasized that planting conditions vary widely across different sectors, with some farms located on flatlands and others on hills and slopes, leading to varied growth conditions.

“Some farms have optimal conditions for nurturing crops, while others face difficulties and require more time to grow properly,” Reddy explained. He argued that year-round access to grants would benefit more farmers, as current deadlines often prevent them from applying due to various challenges.

Senior FSC staff and Agriculture Services Manager (North), Bimlesh Lal, acknowledged Reddy’s concerns and stated that the proposal has been forwarded to the Ministry of Finance for consideration. “We must wait for their approval or recommendations, as they release the funds based on a quota system,” Lal said.

The current quota system distributes funds over a set period, requiring farmers to meet specific planting criteria and receive approval to qualify for a grant. FSC board member and farmer Akisi Vinaka noted that many farmers miss out on grants due to deadline constraints and supported the proposal for open access.

Vinaka believes that open access to grants would provide significant relief to hardworking farmers. Mr. Singh advised FSC to make every effort to support farmers in achieving better sugarcane yields and reassured them that FSC staff are doing their best to assist.

Reddy added that measures should be implemented to prevent misuse of the planting grant, ensuring that deserving farmers receive the necessary support to enhance sugarcane supply.
