A proposal to initiate world-class open-heart surgeries at Labasa Hospital could revolutionize healthcare in Fiji’s Northern Division, pending government approval. Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH Hospitals) has put forth a plan to construct a cutting-edge cardiology department that includes a modern catheterization laboratory.
During a recent visit from the Public Accounts Committee, PSH Founder and Chief Executive Parvish Kumar articulated his vision to Assistant Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel and his delegation. He stressed the importance of strategic partnerships with successful private hospital operators like PSH to enhance Fiji’s healthcare system. Instead of relying on visiting specialists for cardiac care, PSH aims to implement a home-grown solution to meet local needs.
Kumar highlighted that with the same government funding currently allocated to Labasa Hospital, PSH could deliver more efficient operations while introducing advanced cardiac services in the North. This initiative is not solely a healthcare improvement but also carries significant economic implications. Enhanced medical infrastructure could instill investor confidence, driving new business, tourism opportunities, and international events to Labasa. The availability of high-quality emergency and surgical care could make the region more appealing for long-term investments, including resorts and retirement homes.
Previous successes at PSH, such as multiple open-heart surgeries performed recently, underline the feasibility of establishing these services locally. This move showcases PSH’s growing capabilities and positions Fiji as a prospective health tourism destination, offering affordable, high-standard medical care that reduces the need for overseas treatment. Kumar argues that this initiative exemplifies the community’s commitment to improving healthcare access and delivering critical services at home.
Overall, this proposal presents a hopeful vision for both healthcare and economic growth in the Northern Division, promoting a healthier population and increased opportunities for local and foreign investment in Fiji’s future.
