In the Solove Sector of Fiji, Seqaqa, an inspiring story of resilience and innovation is emerging within the sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has made significant strides in improving the livelihoods of local cane farmers by providing essential tractor services.
After leaving school in Form 4, Mr. Murti began his career as a cane harvester and later managed Batiri Citrus Farm under Food Process. He identified a crucial opportunity in the sugarcane sector, driven by a new initiative introduced by the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with the backing of the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, he took the bold initiative to become a transport service provider. “I observed a lack of tractors in the sector, which made land preparation challenging for farmers,” he stated. Many cane growers struggled to pay for services upfront, but with the FSC’s business plan and work order system, Mr. Murti was able to offer tractor services without requiring immediate cash payments. “It was a win-win for everyone,” he added.
Starting with just one tractor, he utilized his experience from Food Process to aid local farmers in preparing their land. His commitment to providing reliable services quickly attracted attention from farmers across the area. Over time, his business has significantly expanded, now operating a fleet of six tractors along with essential farming implements, such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers that are crucial for sugarcane cultivation.
“Through perseverance and the support from FSC field officials and my team, I was able to grow the business,” Mr. Murti expressed. “The work order system enabled me to operate effectively as a business, benefiting the farmers in the process.”
Additionally, Mr. Murti has resumed his own cane farming operations. This year, he successfully cultivated 7.5 acres of cane and is planning to expand his farming activities further.
