Revolutionizing Fiji’s Sugarcane: One Farmer’s Journey of Innovation

In the Solove Sector of Fiji, Seqaqa is witnessing a remarkable success story that showcases the resilience and innovation within the local sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly transformed his life and the livelihoods of many cane farmers by emerging as a tractor service provider, addressing a vital need within the sector.

After leaving school after Form 4, Mr. Murti began his career as a cane harvester and later became the manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). His journey took a pivotal turn when he identified a substantial opportunity within Fiji’s sugarcane industry, driven by a new initiative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation.

In 2022, with the backing of the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Murti boldly ventured into the role of transport service provider. “I noticed a shortage of tractors, which posed challenges for farmers preparing their land,” he noted. He discovered that many growers struggled to pay upfront for tractor services. Thanks to FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, he was able to offer services without requiring immediate cash payments. “It was a win-win for everyone,” he added.

Beginning with a single tractor, Mr. Murti leveraged his experience from Food Process to assist local farmers in land preparation. His commitment to providing reliable services quickly earned him the recognition and trust of farmers across the sector. Today, his business has grown remarkably, now featuring a fleet of six tractors along with vital farming implements like disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers.

“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and my team, I was able to expand the business,” he expressed. “The work order system enabled me to operate it professionally, benefitting the farmers as well.” In addition to his services, Mr. Murti has returned to cane farming, cultivating 7.5 acres this year with plans for future expansion.
