In the Solove Sector of Fiji, a remarkable transformation is taking place in the sugarcane farming community, largely thanks to the efforts of Sanjay Murti. The 47-year-old father and founder of Isharat Farm Services has significantly improved the lives of numerous cane farmers by providing essential tractor services in response to a pressing need in the industry.
Having left school in Form 4, Murti initially worked as a cane harvester and later managed the Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). His journey took a pivotal turn when he identified a key opportunity within Fiji’s sugarcane sector, which was spurred by an innovative initiative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with backing from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti made the daring choice to become a transport service provider. He noted, “I saw a shortage of tractors in the sector, which made it difficult for farmers to prepare their land.” Many growers struggled to make upfront payments, but Murti leveraged FSC’s business plan and work order system to provide his services without immediate cash requirements, creating a mutually beneficial situation for all.
Beginning with just one tractor, Murti utilized his previous experience to assist local farmers in land preparation. His commitment to reliable service quickly gained recognition among farmers in the sector. Today, his business has grown to a fleet of six tractors along with essential implements, such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers—tools crucial for sugarcane cultivation.
“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to grow the business,” he shared. “The work order system allowed me to run it like a proper business, and the farmers benefitted, too.”
In addition to providing tractor services, Murti has resumed cane farming himself. This year, he cultivated 7.5 acres of sugarcane and is looking to expand further.
