The University of Fiji is paving the way for a groundbreaking academic future in 2025 by focusing on unique educational programs centered around iTaukei culture. This initiative is spearheaded by the university’s Centre for iTaukei Studies (CIS), which is distinguished as the only dedicated center of its kind in the country.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem emphasized the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge in educational settings, stating, “Our Centre for iTaukei Studies is unique because it’s the only one in Fiji. We’re the only university that offers a dedicated center that is specifically for iTaukei studies—that means culture, language, performance, art, and craft.”
In an innovative step, the university plans to set up additional educational activities in Levuka, where traditional chiefs will take on the role of adjunct professors. This initiative aims to bring the wisdom and knowledge of elders to students, allowing them to engage more deeply with their cultural heritage. “We will be appointing traditional chiefs as adjunct professors… They will be the ones benefiting from having the elders teach them about their traditional aspects of their culture or language,” explained Professor Shameem.
Furthermore, the university is making strides in the realms of science and technology by focusing on emerging fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and blockchain technology. Professor Shameem stated, “It’s extremely important to understand artificial intelligence, its limits, its function in society, and its risks.”
With its commitment to innovation and student success, the University of Fiji aims to offer distinctive academic programs while ensuring they remain at the forefront of educational excellence in Fiji and beyond.
This forward-thinking approach not only enriches the educational landscape of Fiji but also serves as an inspiration for other institutions to blend cultural tradition with modern technological advancements. The dedication to fostering both cultural pride and academic innovation creates a holistic environment for students, preparing them for a diverse and interconnected world.
