Revolutionizing Communication: A Fiji Success Story

Communications is a crucial component across various industries and government sectors, whether it’s for raising awareness about policies, marketing products, or disseminating critical messages during disasters or pandemics.

Online communication platforms such as social media, websites, and apps like Viber have been available for years. However, it wasn’t until around 2018 that these tools were effectively leveraged in a coordinated way for organizations in Fiji and the Pacific.

At that time, the government sought an innovative solution to enhance its communication capabilities but couldn’t find one. While already consulting for multiple organizations, I saw an opportunity and took up the challenge through my company, Vatis. This endeavor significantly transformed Fiji’s communications landscape, influencing major corporations, governments, and media organizations to adopt the strategies developed.

Establishing dissemination platforms is vital. Mainstream media remain essential partners, but in this age of mass communication technology, it’s crucial for modern organizations and governments to have their platforms. Effective communication now encompasses public relations, reputation management, disaster mitigation, marketing, and more. A unified approach is necessary for strategy and implementation.

For clients, I emphasize building their communication capabilities and assets while maintaining good media relations. Having proprietary platforms is not only efficient but also cost-effective. Online platforms can integrate with customer service teams, improving client satisfaction and product sales.

For instance, the Fiji Government’s Facebook page saw remarkable growth in followers and reach under our management, becoming a key platform for disseminating government policies and grants.

The continuity of these efforts is crucial, as demonstrated by the rise in engagement and popularity of the government’s online assets.

In disaster response, effective communication becomes even more critical. Fiji, being susceptible to natural disasters, needs robust communication platforms to keep the public informed and safe. Communication efforts during events like the COVID-19 lockdowns and cyclones showcased how critical information could be efficiently disseminated, aiding in safety and coordination.

Customer service and complaint mechanisms are also pivotal. Modern technology allows organizations to create effective platforms affordably. It’s important to be available across multiple platforms, from websites and phone calls to social media and apps like Viber. Many organizations now adopt multi-platform approaches, enhancing accessibility and service delivery.

Technology’s role in communication is indisputable. The rapid accessibility of information has transformed how organizations engage with audiences. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok offer vast opportunities for business growth and have opened global markets for Fiji. Young entrepreneurs leverage these technologies for various business ventures.

While peak performance in government communication may have waned, many organizations continue to benefit from the systems we established. Communication remains paramount, and effectively conveying ideas has always been a powerful tool, as exemplified by innovators like Steve Jobs.

Until next week, take care and be safe!
