Revolutionizing Child Interviews: New Training Tool Unveiled in Fiji

Investigators are currently receiving child-specialist interview training utilizing Video Recorded Interview (VRI) rooms, a program facilitated by the New Zealand Police as part of the Fiji Police Partnership Programme (FPPP).

In the framework of the FPPP, senior New Zealand Police Liaison officers are collaborating with the Fiji Police to enhance ongoing efforts in four key areas: Training, Leadership, Dog Patrol, and Investigation. This partnership has marked significant achievements in training and capacity building, with the latest milestone being the launch of the Child Interview Course.

Upon completing this training, investigators will be equipped to conduct interviews with children using video recordings, which will be admissible as evidence in court.

Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci emphasized the importance of this training, stating, “Through this training, we can avoid children from being re-victimised.” He acknowledged the global reality where millions of children face the threat of crime and sexual violence, with local statistics highlighting similar risks for children in Fiji.

Raikaci noted that while they receive reports of such incidents, effective investigation remains critical. He stated, “If we get things right and ensure successful prosecutions through thorough investigations, then we would be sending a strong message as a deterrent.”

He expressed gratitude on behalf of the Fiji Police Force to the New Zealand Police for their support in enhancing investigative interviewing capabilities through this initiative.
