Revolutionizing Child Interviews: Fiji and New Zealand Police Join Forces

Investigators in Fiji are currently undergoing specialized training in interviewing children, utilizing Video Recorded Interview (VRI) rooms provided by the New Zealand Police as part of the Fiji Police Partnership Programme (FPPP).

This initiative involves senior officers from New Zealand working collaboratively with the Fiji Police to bolster efforts in four key areas: Training, Leadership, Dog Patrol, and Investigation. The partnership has made notable progress in training and capacity building, with the latest achievement being the inauguration of the Child Interview Course.

Upon completing this training, investigators will be equipped to conduct video-recorded interviews with children, which can then be submitted as evidence in court.

Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci emphasized the importance of this training, stating, “Through this training, we can avoid children from being re-victimized.” He acknowledged the alarming reality that millions of children worldwide face the risk of crime and sexual violence, and noted that this issue is reflected in local monthly statistics.

Raikaci highlighted that while they handle reports as they come in, effective investigations are crucial to proactive policing. He stressed that successful investigations leading to prosecutions could serve as a strong deterrent against such crimes. He also expressed gratitude to the New Zealand Police for their support in enhancing the investigative interviewing skills of more officers through the implementation of the Video Recorded Interview Rooms.
