Nature-based aquaculture presents an innovative and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional aquaculture methods, according to Dr. Alok Kalla, head of aquaculture at the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests. At the Aqua-Pearl Stakeholder Inception and Workshop held in Suva, Dr. Kalla highlighted the environmental costs associated with conventional aquaculture, such as pollution, habitat destruction, and the threat of overfishing.

Nature-based aquaculture aims to replicate natural ecosystems by integrating aquaculture practices with conservation efforts. Dr. Kalla emphasized the importance of restoring and protecting natural habitats like mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. These ecosystems not only support diverse marine life but also provide significant ecological benefits, including water filtration, coastal erosion prevention, and carbon dioxide sequestration.

A critical component of nature-based aquaculture is utilizing sustainable feed sources. Traditional practices often depend on fishmeal and fish oil from wild-caught fish, which contributes to the decline of fish populations. In contrast, nature-based aquaculture promotes alternative, plant-based feed options, such as insects and algae, reducing environmental impact while ensuring the health of cultivated marine species.

Moreover, Dr. Kalla pointed out that this method plays a significant role in combating climate change. By restoring coastal ecosystems, nature-based aquaculture enhances their ability to absorb carbon dioxide and shields coastal communities from sea-level rise and extreme weather events. Emphasizing a shift towards sustainable practices can lead to a low-carbon future.

Dr. Kalla concluded by urging stakeholders to adopt this transformative approach to aquaculture, which can create a sustainable, equitable future while supporting local communities and safeguarding marine ecosystems.
