The government, with assistance from the Australian government, has implemented reforms for civil servants, according to Finance Minister Biman Prasad. This announcement was made in Nadi in response to a question from Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry chair Dr. Ram Raju regarding wage increases for civil servants.
Dr. Raju inquired about plans to enhance activities for civil servants in line with wage increases. In his reply, Mr. Prasad emphasized that ensuring the wellbeing of civil servants is a key consideration.
Mr. Prasad pointed out that substantial budgets allocated to various ministries often go unutilized. He cited environmental projects, such as water supply improvements for Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, which are hindered by poor planning and execution from ministries like public works and lands.
He mentioned that a significant budget was allocated to the health ministry last year, but the execution was lacking. As a result, medical supplies and essential drugs were not delivered on time, affecting the services provided.
The finance minister assured that the government expects civil service performance to improve and that there will be efforts to ensure allocated resources are effectively utilized.
Mr. Prasad also disclosed plans to establish a training institute for the civil service to enhance efficiency and service delivery.
