Revolutionary Civil Service Reforms Unveiled by Government

The government has implemented reforms for civil servants with assistance from the Australian government. This was announced by Finance Minister Biman Prasad in Nadi, in response to inquiries from Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chair Dr. Ram Raju regarding wage increases for civil servants.

Dr. Raju questioned how government activities would be enhanced alongside the wage increases. Minister Prasad emphasized the importance of ensuring civil servants are performing effectively. He pointed out that significant budgets allocated to various ministries often go unutilized.

“For example, we are addressing environmental issues such as water supply for Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. If ministries like public works and lands do not plan and deliver systematically, progress will not be made,” Prasad explained.

He noted that a substantial budget had been allocated to the health ministry the previous year, but poor utilization led to delays in medical supplies and hindered service delivery.

“We expect the civil service, our permanent secretaries, and ministers to ensure that allocated resources are utilized effectively,” Prasad stated.

Additionally, Prasad revealed plans to establish a training institute for the civil service.
