A groundbreaking open-heart surgery at Pacific Specialist Healthcare Hospital (PSH) in Nadi marks a significant achievement for the facility, which now offers advanced cardiac procedures to patients in the region. The hospital successfully performed a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) on 61-year-old Kusum Lata from Natabua, executed flawlessly by a skilled team of Cardio Thoracic specialists.
Lata, a mother of three, expressed immense gratitude toward the management and staff of PSH for their exemplary service. She recounted a challenging period during which she suffered severe chest pains and a minor heart attack in June. Initially, her family was advised to prepare $50,000 for a trip to India for her surgery. However, upon recommendation from a family member, they explored local options, leading them to PSH.
Thrilled at the prospect of having the surgery done locally at a fraction of the cost, Lata described the relief she felt post-surgery and praised the hospital staff for their attentive care throughout her treatment. She eagerly anticipates reuniting with her family and cuddling her grandchild.
PSH founder and director Parvish Kumar emphasized that the implementation of the cardiology department and the successful surgery were results of over 15 months of dedicated planning, investment in cutting-edge technology, and collaboration across various disciplines. He noted the fortunate timing of Lata’s inquiry about cardiology services, which enabled her to receive vital treatment at home.
Kumar highlighted that while similar procedures might cost around $50,000 in India, the expenses could soar even higher in other countries. He sees this achievement as positioning Fiji as an emerging health tourism destination, showcasing state-of-the-art medical facilities at competitive rates. Plans are underway to promote Fiji as a health market option, coupling quality healthcare with the appeal of a holiday destination.
This development is promising not only for local patients who now have access to advanced healthcare services but also for the potential tourism industry, which could benefit from health seekers looking for affordable yet high-quality medical treatment coupled with the beauty of Fiji. The successful surgery and PSH’s advancements highlight the growing capabilities of local healthcare, providing hope and improving lives within the community.
