For the first time in 14 years, St. John Primary School in Wailoku has reintroduced its inter-house athletics competition, generating excitement among students, parents, and staff. Nearly 300 students from both primary and kindergarten levels participated with great enthusiasm in this long-awaited event.
Joseva Vere, the head of the school, highlighted the importance of reviving this tradition, stating, “The inter-house competition had been absent for approximately 14 years. It was only last year that we discussed with the staff to bring it back because we realized the students were missing out, and many of them are participating for the first time.”
Vere underscored the school’s commitment to discovering and nurturing the talents of students, many of whom may possess untapped athletic potential that has remained unnoticed due to the lack of the inter-house event. “Who knows, we might have some children who excel in athletics, but without exposure, that talent goes unrecognized. That’s why we are here today,” he remarked.
This year, the school’s primary focus remains on their internal activities, and they have opted out of zonal competitions. However, Vere acknowledged that the possibility of joining zonal events in future years is still being considered.
