Reviving the Sugar Industry: How Government Aid is Transforming Farmers’ Lives

The Ministry of Sugar Industry is actively working to improve sugarcane productivity and support farmers in the Northern Division by assisting 22 farmers in Labasa and 36 farmers in Seaqaqa through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program. This initiative offers eligible farmers financial aid covering 30 percent of lease renewal costs, up to a limit of $7,500.

During the distribution of grant agreements to farmers, Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh highlighted that the program is designed to ease the financial pressures on farmers and encourage both new and established farmers to increase sugarcane production. Singh emphasized the vital role of the sugar industry as the largest sector in the northern division and the necessity for its revitalization.

The government’s support arises from concerns expressed by farmers regarding the steep premiums associated with lease renewals. Additionally, two farmers from Seaqaqa received help through the Farm Mechanization Grant for a cane planter and fertilizer applicator.

The Ministry plans to extend similar assistance to sugarcane farmers in the western division as well, with a total of 177 farmers in both northern and western divisions having benefitted from this program so far.

One Seaqaqa farmer, Mohammed Janab, expressed his gratitude for the government’s support, noting that the assistance has been a significant relief for him and his family, as the government has contributed $5,000 towards his $15,000 premium.
